Rose criticized the DiggBar's user experience as "inconsistent" and "wonky," and called the feature "bad for the Internet." According to Rose, the company will instead choose to focus on its browser extensions, which offer many of the same features that could be found in the DiggBar. Rose said Digg will overhaul these add-ons in a few months. 

Along with the removal of the DiggBar, Digg plans to un-ban all domains that have been banned in the past. This could open up the site to a lot of junk, but Rose said that a set of "automated filters" will catch items that violate the site's terms of service.

The timing of the announcement may be the most interesting bit of this news. On Monday morning, (now former) Digg CEO Jay Adelson announced his immediate departure from the company, leaving site founder Kevin Rose with the reins. Adelson had been Digg's CEO since 2004. The sudden announcement that the DiggBar would be kaput on the very same day raises the question as to whether it had been a source of tension between the two.

The U.S. military has filed criminal charges against an Army intelligence analyst who has been accused of sending sensitive files to Wikileaks, including a controversial video showing troops firing on Reuters journalists. 

Pfc. Bradley Manning, 22, was charged Monday with sending the video to a person not authorized to receive it and with obtaining "more than 150,000 diplomatic cables" from the State Department. The charges were made public Tuesday. 

Adrian Lamo, a hacker who pleaded guilty in 2004 to breaking into The New York Times' computer network, told CNET last month that Manning had contacted him and shared details of his leaks. Lamo said he subsequently tipped off and met with authorities.

In April, Wikileaks released a gritty video--which Manning allegedly sent to the organization--showing U.S. troops in Iraq destroying a vehicle that was preparing to rush a wounded Reuters journalist to the hospital. The Apache pilots appeared to mistake the Reuters news crew, who were holding cameras, for armed insurgents.

Netflix said Tuesday that it has signed a long-term agreement with Relativity to stream first-run films from the movie house. The deal would allow Netflix subscribers to stream the movies online a few months after their DVD releases but during what is traditionally known as the "pay TV window."

Relativity, the studio responsible for "Get him to the Greek" and "Grown Ups," says it produces or finances 20 to 30 new movies each year. The first of its films to be made available through Netflix streaming will be "The Fighter" and "Skyline," both of which are due for their theatrical releases early next year.
